Effects of two oral iron preparations on results of the benzidine test for occult blood in stools.

چکیده
Thirty healthy male volunteers were used in this double blind trial. Two kinds of iron preparation and a placebo tablet containing no iron salt were used. The subjects were given one three times a day after meals in courses of 21 tablets. Stools collected before and after administration of the tablets were subjected to a benzidine test (Thornton and Illingworth, 1955). The results showed that both iron preparations increased the number of positive results obtained by means of the benzidine test. The analyses failed to show any significant difference between the effects of the two preparations.

Influence of Iron Preparations on Occult Blood Tests.
Ferrous fumarate (Fersamal) and ferrous carbonate (Ferrodic) may produce false-positive results with the orthotolidine tablet tests (Occultest and Hematest) if administered to patients being investigated for alimentary bleeding. Misleading results are also likely if the benzidine test is employed as a filter-paper procedure. Ferrous sulphate, gluconate, succinate, iron and ammonium citrate, and...

متن کاملAssessment of Routine Tests for Occult Blood in Faeces.
Routine chemical methods for the detection of occult blood in faeces depend on the peroxidase-like activity of haemoglobin and its iron-containing degradation products. The clinical value of these tests was first demonstrated by Boas (1901), using a method based on the guaiacum. test for blood described by van Deen (1861). Adler and Adler (1904) claimed that the colour reaction given by benzidi...

Stools from asymptomatic volunteers on diets containing red meat, whole blood, or high fiber were analyzed for their content of hemes and dicarboxylic (heme-derived) porphyrins by the "HemoQuant" assay, the "Hemoccult" test, and "high-performance" liquid chromatography (HPLC). In 49 subjects, ingestion of red meat increased HemoQuant-determined combined fecal heme plus dicarboxylic porphyrins b...
